TV/Radio

I was at a house party last night in Hollywood and the Television was on mute and the Radio was playing full blast. Before a lot of people arrived, everyone was sitting around watching the TV but singing along to the music. Finally I asked the host why both pieces of electronic equipment were in use at the same time and he said, "I do this all the time. The radio is boring without something to watch". I still don't know how to take that explanation because if what is on TV doesn't go with the music, it doesn't make any sense to me! If anyone has an opinion about this, I would love to hear it because I am at a loss!

Okaaaay…Here’s the deal, try to follow my logic… Since the dawn of MTV, music has become inseparable from video, Media moguls across the globe have been tightening the control over what is and is not made available to the “mass market.” The natural evolution of this marriage has produced (not necessarily in this order): Banal, over-produced “music videos”; the end of diversity in AM/FM radio; the i-Pod, the i-Phone; and a ton of i-replicas to keep a steady stream of, well, let’s call it what it is: “entertainment” re: noise, distraction, hype, et. al. So, your friend has become exactly the media consumer that the people controlling the media want. Think about it.

Very interesting theory, anonymous. You are very possibly correct in your analysis. Experts say that today children have approximately a seven minute attention span from watching too much TV in seven minute intervals between commercials so I think it is quite possible that my friend has a similar syndrome from too much MTV etc. Thank you for your input!:)
