When you are watching television or movies, pay special attention to actors who are eating. Notice how they mostly push food around on their plates but every so often they actually put food in their mouths.
This is because the wonderful prop master has spent time cooking whatever it is the family is having for dinner.
You have to be careful onset not to eat the props for two reasons. Reason number one is continuity. Meaning that if it is established that I've taken two bites of my bagel, but then if in the next shot I only have bagel crumbs on my plate, that doesn't match up.
Reason number two is because some of the prop food that is used regularly, for example a bowl of apples on the table, is sprayed with a finish to preserve them. Nothing like eating fake fruit!

That is very interesting. Continuity is something we don't usually notice until it's not there. Is that someone's particular job, keeping everything in sync?
